Active versus passive cooling Which AKHET® IPC suits your use case?

Choosing the right cooling system is a decisive factor when purchasing an industrial PC (IPC). Whether active or passive cooling - both approaches have their strengths and are suitable for different application scenarios.

The right cooling system for your use case

Which cooling system is the right one depends crucially on your application scenario. If peak performance, computing-intensive workloads and maximum flexibility are the priority, an actively cooled AKHET® IPC is the first choice. If, on the other hand, moderate workloads, low power consumption and operation at high temperatures are required, a passively cooled AKHET® system is recommended - especially in conjunction with energy-efficient processors.

Advantages of actively cooled IPCs

Actively cooled systems rely on fans to reliably dissipate heat from the housing. They therefore enable the use of particularly powerful processors such as Intel® Core™ i7 to i9 or Xeon® and offer maximum performance for demanding applications. The continuous air circulation ensures that the heat is effectively dissipated even under permanently high loads and that the systems remain stable in operation. This makes them particularly suitable for scenarios in which computing-intensive workloads such as image processing, AI algorithms or virtualization are used. Thanks to active cooling, these IPCs can be built compactly and configured flexibly - ideal for reliably absorbing peak loads and planning reserves for future requirements.

Advantages of passively cooled IPCs

Passively cooled systems rely on more energy-efficient processors that enable a good balance between performance and economy. As their waste heat is significantly lower, they can completely dispense with housing and processor fans and use heat sinks instead - which also contributes to the compactness of the systems. The passive cooling elements are designed to keep the system running reliably even under high ambient conditions and at full load. As there are no openings in the housing and no mechanical parts, the devices are particularly resistant to dust, dirt and vibrations. Another advantage is the silent operation: without a fan, the systems do not increase the noise level in already noisy production environments. Passively cooled IPCs therefore come into their own wherever low energy consumption, low waste heat and compactness are more important than maximum performance.
