For the retail trade Self-checkout solutions

Would you like to take your company to the next level? We can help you! What does self-checkout mean?

With self-checkout, customers pay for the items in their shopping basket themselves at a stationary self-service checkout or using a mobile system (hand scanner or smartphone app).

Since 2015, the number of self-checkouts at the point of sale (POS) has increased by almost 80%. Most self-checkout systems are used in food retail (LEH), followed by DIY stores (DYI), drugstores, furniture stores and sports and clothing stores (fashion). The checkout process in self-service works in such a way that the customer holds the barcode of an item up to the scanner of the self-service checkout. The software identifies the item and adds it to the bill. At the end, the total amount is shown to the customer on the terminal display, who then pays via an EFT module. Some retailers offer payment with cash as an alternative or as an option.

The latest self-checkout technologies use artificial intelligence and machine vision. The customer holds the item under the image sensor and the terminal software recognizes it based on its shape and color. This makes self-checkout and payment for items even easier, quicker and more convenient.

Self-checkout on the rise!

Conventional cash registers are still in the majority in Germany. This will change quickly over the next few years, as consumers have become much more open to the use of self-service technology.

All age groups see self-service checkouts on the rise. According to the study The Future of Shopping, published by market research company Kantar, 86% of around 3,000 respondents (aged 18-65) believe that conventional checkouts will be largely replaced by 2030.

When it comes to digitizing the point of sale, it is important to know that not all self-service checkouts are the same. The use case determines which product is the right one and will ultimately be used.

To name just two examples: Where large shopping baskets are waiting to be self-scanned by the customer, different scanners need to be installed to recognize the barcodes on the items than in the self-checkout solution for the tea store, where things are more tranquil and shopping is more of a pleasure than a necessity.

And in the fashion store, the self-service checkout will be a combination device with a very large touch display that allows customers to browse the retailer's online range. Such a system is therefore both a self-checkout solution and an Endless Aisle.

Advantages of self-checkout kiosks

Customer satisfaction

Surveys show that 70% of customers abandon their purchase due to long waiting times. Self-checkout checkouts can help here, as they shorten queues at conventional checkouts and thus reduce waiting times. This improves the customer experience and increases sales.

Process optimization

Self-service checkouts improve in-store processes in the retail sector. Self-service checkouts streamline the payment process, for example. As they can usually only be used to pay by debit or credit card, the retailer's cash handling costs are significantly reduced.

Increase in productivity

The use of self-checkout tills relieves employees from cashing up, allowing them to concentrate more on customer-oriented tasks such as advice, shelf maintenance, empties management and decoration - areas that promote brand loyalty.

Secure shopping

The COVID-19 pandemic has made consumers more aware of hygiene. Self-checkout tills promote contactless shopping and enable social distancing. The antibacterial coating on the touch display offers additional safety.
